Mercedes has launched an electric version of its C-Class saloon, and money-conscious drivers will want to know what it means for running costs.
Mercedes has brought out a fully electric version of its C-Class saloon, and for drivers weighing up whether to switch, the big question is what it actually costs to buy and run compared with the petrol or diesel car they already know.
The C-Class has long been one of the benchmarks in the compact executive saloon market, sitting alongside rivals from BMW and Audi in the sector where German premium brands are most closely watched. According to multiple reports, Mercedes chief executive Ola Källenius has said the car is deliberately designed to appeal to the core Mercedes buyer, with the aim that the move to electric power should feel natural rather than disruptive. Whether that holds true for your wallet is a separate matter.
On the ownership cost side, electric executive saloons in this class typically carry a higher list price than their petrol equivalents, so the monthly finance payment or upfront purchase price will reflect that. Road tax for zero-emission cars is also changing, so it is worth checking the current Vehicle Excise Duty rates before you commit, as the free-tax advantage that early EV adopters enjoyed has narrowed.
Insurance is another figure to keep in mind. Electric vehicles in this class have tended to sit in higher insurance groups than comparable petrol models, partly because of repair costs for battery systems, so getting a fresh quote before you sign anything is a practical step rather than an optional one.
