Petrol and diesel are sold by the litre in the UK, but most of us still think about a fill-up in gallons. These are today’s UK averages in both, taken from the official price feed covering 7,994 forecourts.

The conversion
A UK gallon is 4.54609 litres, so a price per gallon is the pump price per litre multiplied by 4.54609. At 161.4p/L that is £7.34 a gallon. Be careful with American figures: the US gallon is 3.785 litres, about a sixth smaller, so a US price looks cheaper than it is.
Pay less than the average
The average is not what you have to pay. Today the cheapest unleaded on the feed is £6.59 a gallon (145.0p/L), and the spread between forecourts a few miles apart is routinely worth more than a pound a gallon.
