Buying a private plate without overpaying: what is compulsory

By The Promo Desk, Automotive Data Editor · 18 Oct 2026

Running a car costs enough already. Here is what you must pay for a private plate, what is optional, and how PrivatePlates.co.uk prices each mark.

Fuel, insurance and servicing make up most of what a car costs to run, but some drivers add a one-off extra: a private plate. Unlike pump prices, which move every day, the cost of a registration mark is fixed on the day you buy it, so a little care at the start saves money for good.

Start with what you cannot avoid. Every assignment of a registration mark to a vehicle carries an £80 DVLA fee, and VAT applies to the mark itself. A price that leaves either out will look lower than it really is, so compare totals that include both.

PrivatePlates.co.uk, New Reg Limited's online private plate shop, shows its prices with VAT and the £80 fee already included. For every registration the DVLA also offers, it charges less than the DVLA's own published price for the same mark, currently £1 less, comparing like with like. It checked its prices against the DVLA's price list on 16 October 2026 and shows live examples side by side.

Then decide what you actually need. Nothing beyond the mark and the fee is compulsory: you can assign the registration to your car yourself without paying anything more. If you would rather hand it over, an assignment service costs £20 a registration mark, and road-legal number plates are an optional extra with tracked postage included. The full breakdown is on the pricing page.

Two rules prevent an expensive mistake. A dated registration can go on a vehicle as new as the date it shows or newer, never an older one, while dateless marks fit a car of any age. And a mark that has never been on a vehicle comes on a certificate that runs for ten years, so there is no need to assign it the day you buy.

Keeping the rest of your motoring costs down is easier with live data. Compare pump prices near you on fuel.co.uk, and when you are ready to choose a registration, search PrivatePlates.co.uk.
