Which fuel brand is cheapest right now: the 12.4p spread

Go currently has the cheapest average unleaded of any major UK fuel brand at £7.34 a gallon (161.5p a litre), measured across 29 of its forecourts reporting through the official price scheme. The most expensive of the 23 brands compared is BP Harvest Energy at £7.91/gal (173.9p), a difference of 56.4p a gallon (12.4p a litre) or £6.82 on a 55-litre fill.

The five cheapest brands on average: Go at £7.34/gal (161.5p) across 29 sites; Solo at £7.46/gal (164.2p) across 41 sites; Maxol at £7.49/gal (164.7p) across 90 sites; Circle K at £7.52/gal (165.4p) across 44 sites; Asda at £7.59/gal (166.9p) across 321 sites.

The average across all 23 brands compared is £7.69 a gallon (169.2p a litre). Only brands with at least 20 forecourts reporting are included, so a handful of sites cannot distort the ranking, and motorway services operators are left out because their prices reflect the motorway premium rather than the brand.

Two things to keep in mind. A brand average reflects where that brand operates as much as how it prices, so a chain concentrated in one part of the UK can read cheap for regional reasons. And an individual forecourt of an expensive brand can undercut a cheap one locally, while prices move daily. Check the brand pages on this site for each brand’s live prices and its cheapest sites, or search your postcode to compare every forecourt near you.
